Mr. Pagler, the non-Jewish man who voluntarily looks after the Jewish cemeteries in Vienna, says that about 250,000 Jewish burials are computerized in a database established with the assistance of the Economic University. The database belongs to the Jewish community and is only available for private persons who are looking for their ancestors. All the burials in Vienna Zentralfriedhof (Gate 1 and 4) are in this database. For information, write to the Vienna Kultusgemeinde Matrikelamt or Direktion. A donation is appreciated. Rossau Cemetery aka 9 Seegasse Cemetery: Site of the medieval Jewish community and the oldest Jewish cemetery extant in Austria. The oldest tombstone dates from 1450. The cemetery closed in 1783.

Access is through the entrance of the Municipal Old Age Home open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Ask the porter for the key. Access is by a pass obtained before you go there from the 4th floor of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien, Seitenstettengasse 4, A-1010 Wien, Austria. • "I recently came across an article in the Austrian/Jewish journal DAVID entitled "Maehrische Juden in Wien 1784 - 1874" (Moravian Jews in Vienna 1784 - 1874) by Tina Walzer. It appears that the Institute for the History of the Jews in Austria under the leadership of Ms. Walzer is in the process of publishing later this year a major research project on CD-ROM. It is based on about 9000 burials in the Waehringer cemetery in Vienna, which was in use from 1784 to the 1880s.

  Das Graeberbuch (grave book) of the Waehringer cemetery which lists 8634 burials, supplies the following information: First and family name, family status, place of origin (not necessarily place of birth), date of birth, place and date of death. This treasure was found in Jerusalem at the Archive for the History of the Jewish People. It was among the records that the Jewish community of Vienna had transferred during the 1950s to this archive and used the following:

    As part of this undertaking a photographic record of about 2500 existing graves is being prepared in Vienna by Mr.Wolf Erich Eckstein ( a participant of AustriaCzech) and in Jerusalem Mr. Wolfgang Gasser is working on a family history database.The article in DAVID shows that of the 8634 persons buried in this cemetery, 1382 came from Moravia, with some of the following numbers from the larger communities:

This cemetery, the largest Jewish burial ground in Vienna, is the only one still active and has computerized records. The Jewish section is divided into two parts, Gate 1 and Gate 4. Gate 1 is the older section and contains burials dating from at least 1881. Gate 4 has burials from 1928 on. [At gate No. 4 is also an official of the Kultusgemeinde (Jewish Community). Currently, damage from 2nd World War in this cemetery is being repaired. September 2000] Gate 1 is at 232 Simmeringer Hauptstrasse in the 11th district. The cemetery is open Sundays through Thursdays from 7 AM to 5 PM and Friday from 7 to 3. Enter through Gate 1 first to find Walter Pagler's office as head of Verein Schalom. Monday to Friday from 7 to 11 am. He has the computerized listing of the burials in the Zentralfriedhof for both Gates 1 and Gate 4. Gate 4 has only the index cards of the burials. Mr. Pagler can run off a printout of everyone with the same surname, providing it is within reason. Verein Schlaom is involved in the restoration of 51 Jewish cemeteries all over Austria, most in Lower Austria, but also in the Burgenland, Styria and Carinthia. In 1999, Verein Schalom published a guidecalled Wegweiser (in German) for visitors to Jewish cemeteries in Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland, Styria and Carinthia.
