  Joseph Held section of Baron Hirsch: No one from our family had visited for ages. We were warned by the office that Joseph Held was one of the sections that was terribly overgrown (possibly with poison ivy) and came prepared with gloves, gardening tools and trash bags. It took a long time to find the two graves because almost all the stones were covered over and the office could not provide a detailed map. Apparently, the growth of English ivy and other climbing plants that had been popular decades ago had been left totally unchecked. In some places, they had not only grown over the stones but also attached themselves to low hanging tree branches, creating a jungle of vines. Eventually, we found our gf's grave and almost missed our gm's because the stone had toppled off the base. We filled up about 6 huge trash bags (all that we had brought) just from clearing a relatively small area. We went again a year later and were amazed how much had grown back, mainly growth from adjacent plots. This email address is being protected from spambots. Mt. Richmond Cemetery: 420 Clarke Avenue, Staten Island NY 10306-6139, (718) 667-0915. Burials began 1909 and continue today. Death certificates may abbreviate this cemetery as MR. Several synagogues used these two cemeteries [?] owned by the Hebrew Free Burial Association, but only those synagogues [not named] have those records. The Hebrew Free Burial Association has the records for 55,000 burials they have done and will release this information only to relatives. Direct all inquiries to: Hebrew Free Burial Society.   Cemetery on Staten Island follows:

• Eastern European Jews from the Lower East Side of Manhattan formed the Hebrew Free Burial Association in 1888. The group bought Mt. Richmond plots in 1909. In 1911, the fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company on Waverly Place killed 146 young women, many Jewish immigrants, who are buried at Mt. Richmond with the words "Died at the Fire" etched on their headstones. Burials peaked at 1,261 in 1914 with more than half children. In 1986, burials reached a low of 139. An estimated 55,000 burials occurred in the 1900s. Among the graves are indigent Jews, sometimes buried without a marker, Holocaust survivors who died penniless, and more recently, arrivals from Ukraine's Chernobyl disaster, who came to the U.S. for treatment. Many NYC organizations used to insure indigent Jews a proper burial. Now, the Hebrew Free Burial Association is the only one remaining. Surviving on occasional donations and meager government subsidies, the association nearly went bankrupt in the mid-1980s. The cemetery fell into disrepair. In 1984, an investment banker, Gerald E. Feldhamer, became the organization's president. His aggressive fund raising efforts restored the cemetery and its chapel and increased the annual budget. The number of free or low cost burials increased to more than 400 in 1995.

  Currently, Rabbi Shmuel Plafker presides over the cemetery's religious functions and the physical site. As archivist, he continues to inscribe new burials in the newest of three crumbling ledgers. Every person buried in Mt. Richmond cemetery is listed in a book. About 30,000 graves were without markers until Mr. Feldhamer started the "Make Your Mark" campaign. Some 600 markers have been added. At least one Jewish burial is found in this cemetery: Braunstein, Raschella or Rosa, age 5, was buried from Ellis Island after being hospitalized for 21 days. NYC Municipal Archives 1910, Reel No. 12. Certificate No. 90-0. Annectodal evidence of other similar Jewish burials.

Silver Lake Cemetery: 926 Victory Blvd. Staten Island, NY 10301. Burials began in 1887 and go through the 1960s. Hebrew Free Burial Society. The Hebrew Free Burial Association is located at 224 West 35th Street Room 300, New York, NY 10001. Executive Director is Amy Koplow [August 2010]
