UPDATE: Jewish Graceland Cemetery: As reported by the Chicago Sun Times [February 9, 2002]: "'The owner of the Jewish Graceland Cemetery Co. is trying to sell it, complete with graves, for $2.25 million, suggesting condos could be built there.'" This land could be redeveloped for R4 zoning regulations [residential units no higher than 38 feet] or continue to be used as a cemetery," says the real estate listing posted on behalf of owner Alexander Lichtenstadt-Partin. "Sold 'as is.' ""Removal of [Jewish] graves is considered a desecration. It is rarely done unless there is some real overriding issue such as if bodies were mistakenly buried. Or there are occasions where bodies are reburied in Israel," said Rabbi Joseph Ozarowski, executive director of the Chicago Rabbinical Council.
Chicago has a long history of moving graves--and even renting them.* When Lincoln Park was created in 1870, about 20,000 bodies were moved from cemeteries at its south end to other cemeteries.* Among the Lincoln Park bodies were those of 6,000 Confederate soldiers who died of disease at the Camp Douglas prison on the South Side during the Civil War. They were reburied in the Confederate Mound in Oak Woods Cemetery on the Far South Side.* During the Great Depression, some graves were sold for 40 years, with the cemetery having the right to re-sell them after that time.* When workers began building the Eisenhower Expy. in 1954, they had to cut a swath through the Forest Home, Concordia and Waldheim cemeteries in Forest Park, forcing the relocation of about 3,250 graves.* In 1994, park district officials in New Lenox built a golf course on a 400-year-old Native American grave site, despite protests from Native Americans that the project was a desecration of their ancestors.*In 1996, the bodies of 170 people were moved to "consolidate" the Allerton Ridge Cemetery in Lombard so that nearly 30 acres could be used for commercial development.
      WOULDN'T BE THE FIRST TIME
"I think it's reprehensible. It's a cemetery. It should be maintained as a cemetery," said Richard Marcus, lawyer for the Hebrew Benevolent Society of Chicago. It owns a separate cemetery flanked on the north and south by the two parcels that are for sale. The area popularly known as Jewish Graceland, a little south of Irving Park on the east side of Clark Street, came into existence in the mid-1800s. Originally four Jewish groups owned separate parcels, each a narrow strip running east to west. The Hebrew Benevolent Society has owned one strip since the 1890s, and took over management of another in 1997.The north and south parts at 3901 and 3931 N. Clark were incorporated in 1962 as Jewish Graceland Cemetery Co. Lichtenstadt-Partin, a former funeral director, was convicted in 1985 of indecent liberties with a minor and sentenced to 10 years in prison. In 1994 he became the registered agent of Jewish Graceland Cemetery Co. In 1998, he and company vice president Gregory Donatelli outraged the Jewish community by proposing a pet cemetery on their land and a Halloween haunted cemetery. Donatelli since 2000 has been serving a 30-year sentence at the Danville Correctional Center as a Class X repeat offender for conviction of crimes including burglary, theft, armed robbery and aggravated battery. As of Friday, the cemetery company's answering machine still identified him as vice president. Contributing: Dave Newbart "

    • UPDATE: Sheriff's Office Lends Hand. "(CBS) - Jewish Graceland Cemetery is believed to be the oldest Jewish cemetery in Chicago, but half of it is a tangle of trees, overgrown weeds and a campsite for the homeless.Half of the cemetery is owned by one family by Edie Eiseman and her sister Cathy Horwitz, and that half of the cemetery is in good shape.  They say they hate to see the other half the way it is."It's a Yiddish word you might not know. But it's a ‘shanda,' it's a shame. It's disrespectful," Edie Eiseman says. The earliest burial was in the 1850s.Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart has had a crew of offenders out working there, in the 3900 block of North Clark, near Wrigley Field, mowing and trimming trees."We'll be able to get it in very good condition.  Then, once it's at that point, it'll be more of a maintenance thing. Someone's going to have to mow the lawn. Someone's going to have to take care of the trees that grow up," he says. The half of the cemetery that's getting all the attention now is owned by Doris Weiss-Evon. She says she's run out of money and wants to sell her half, but not to the sisters who own the other half, the well-kept half."No, I will not deal with them in any way, shape or form," Weiss-Evon says. Dart says he got involved after 44th Ward Ald. Tom Tunney contacted him because Tunney's office was getting complaints about the property.Tunney asked Dart to see if there was anything criminal going on - similar to what Dart's investigators have found at some other cemeteries - that would have led to half the Jewish cemetery being overgrown and untended.Dart says he doesn't see anything criminal there." CHICAGO KLETSKER AID SOCIETY 261 W Chicago Tribune, 13 July 1999: article about disposition of funds in Drohitchin [their spelling] burial society bank account. Apparently, $30,000 was held in the account because no officer of the society remained to administer the funds. The burial grounds were neglected. The Judge ruled that the money be turned over to the General Care Foundation for Jewish Cemeteries that administers other burial grounds at Waldheim. One member of the Drohitchin Synagogue in the late 1920's was David Goodman, father of musician Benny Goodman. Source: This email address is being protected from spambots.
