During Febuary 2003, while cleaning town dump of Zaslavl, 26 Jewish monuments were found. Before the war, the Zaslavl Jewish cemetery was located where the dump is now. At present, the cemetery is considered completely destroyed. According to local citizens who gave this information and brought some pictures, a larger number of monuments can be found when the weather conditions improve in spring. According to local people, some Zaslavl citizens used the monuments for building material for their houses. UPDATE: (April 30, 2003) According to representatives, who visited Zaslavl in order to estimate the volume of works that should be carried out to preserve the cemetery: It is extremely necessary to build up a fence around the cemetery. A month ago, several local citizens made an attempt to clean up the garbage in the part of the cemetery. 25% of the site was cleaned. Yesterday, they found out a new pile of garbage. At the moment, twelve tombstones are at the surface. There is no doubt that 50-60 more tombstones are buried under the garbage. Source: This email address is being protected from spambots.
