Organized in 1836-37 on rented land 193 desyatin (one desyatina = 1.09 hectare], the population of Selets in 1897 604 inhabitants with 561 Jews and in 1898 was 64 families with 548 inhabitants. The center of Jewish religious life in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and in Rzech Pospolitaya (the Union of Polsih Kingdom and the Grand Dutchy of Lithuania), in 1766 Selets had 260 Jews. Ten sessions of the Lithuanian Vaad (meeting of the great rabbies) were organized here. 1897 Jewish population: 886 Jews in a general population of 2,648. [July 2009]
