The few Jews living in Aachen had no cemetery of their own prior to the 19th century. They buried their dead in Düren (old cemetery) or in the nearby cemetery in VAALS in the Netherlands.
Before the Jewish cemetery was established, dead of the Jewish community in Aachen were buried Düren in the old cemetery or in the neighboring Dutch Vaals. Survived the Nazi period in relatively good condition apart from one hit during a bombing attack in WW2. Acquired 1822 - oldest gravestone dated 1829. Cemetery was expanded in 1865 and 1878. 800 to 1,229 gravestones are visible, the oldest from 1829. (Pracht 1997), 1229 (Peters: letter dated 1st January 2001). SOURCE: University of Heidelberg. The cemetery was vandalized several times. Most recently, in the night of 1 for the 2 August 2010 disfigured the cemetery wall with anti-Semitic graffiti and Nazi symbolism.
